COUDERSPORT — Michael Kane, Eli Trimbur and David Kudrick each scored two goals and Coudersport used a five-goal second half to hand Clarion-Limestone an 8-4 loss in their District 9 Class A boys quarterfinal round soccer playoff game Tuesday.
The score was tied 3-2 at halftime when the Falcons (13-6) took control of the contest.
“The first half we were pretty evenly matched,” said Erich Zaun, Coudersport coach. “They had a lot of speed up front and disrupted our defense.
“At halftime we regrouped and came out with better passing from back to front …defense to offense. That seemed to turn the game around and we finished off opportunities that we didn’t in the first half.”
Kane got the scoring started with an unassisted goal that put the Falcons up 1-0.
“This was Michael’s 8th unassisted goal of the season,” Zaun explained. “He just steals it, takes it to the house and shoots it.”
C-L’s Blake Phillips tied the score at 1-1 on a penalty kick, but Kudrick recorded his first goal of the game on a header to put the hosts back on top 2-1. Kudrick’s score came off a successful corner kick by Eli Trimbur that put the ball in play.
Phillips answered with his second goal to deadlock the score at 2-2, but Trimbur converted a penalty kick for his first goal and the Falcons held a 3-2 lead at the break.
Coudersport started its big second half with three straight scores that gave the Falcons a comfortable 6-2 lead.
Kane recorded his second goal, Owen Chambers got in on the scoring and Trimbur capped the run with an unassisted goal for his second boot into the net.
Trimbur assisted on Kane’s goal, while Kudrick and Kasey Cole, the only girl on the team, were credited with assists on Chambers’ goal.
The Lions closed the gap to 6-3 with a goal, but Kudrick’s second goal off an assist from Kane put the Falcons back up by four, 7-3.
Donovan Olney closed out Coudy’s scoring with an assist from Cole that made it 8-3 and Clarion-Limestone added a fourth goal for the final 8-4 score.
In goal for the Falcons was Hunter Lauber, who was credited with five saves.
Playing keeper for the Lions was Harrison Porter with 15 saves.
Coudersport, the 4th seed, will play top-seeded Brockway in the semifinals at a site and time to be announced.
“This is similar to last year when we lost to Brockway in the same round, but I don’t remember if they were the top seed then.” Zaun recalled.
