Hunter Fox is on a roll.
The Bradford High sophomore golfer carded a score of 85 to tie for first place after the opening round of the District 9 Class AAA tournament Monday at Bavarian Hills Golf Course in St. Marys.
Fox will play in the final round Saturday at Bavarian Hills against Drew Canter of DuBois (85), Alec Graham of Clearfield (88), Joe Hnat of DuBois (89) and Jacob Vanlenten of Somerset (92).
“I can’t say enough good things about Hunter Fox and how his season went,” Bradford coach Travis Faulkner said. “Considering he started playing golf in June and where he is now, he has done a phenomenal job. He continues to get better every time he plays.
“He had seven pars and eight bogeys. He started off his round 7-over-par in the first five holes. He then had four straight pars to finish the front nine with a 42. He played consistent on the back nine with pars and bogeys on all of the holes.”
The top two golfers from Saturday’s round will advance to the western regional at Toms Run on Oct. 17.
Bradford’s other player, Joey Gorse, shot 101.
“Being a freshman, Joey started as our number one golfer most of the year,” Faulkner said. “He had an excellent season. I know he’ll be back next year stronger than ever.”
No team champion was crowned because no team met the requirements.
Ridgway’s Ben Ames shot a score of 80 to lead after the opening round of the Class AA tournament.
Ames has a three-stroke lead over Jonah Meyer of Elk Catholic (83) going into Saturday’s final round. Chance Ramsey of Coudersport, Marcus Murphy of Port Allegany and Nick Simon of Ridgway shot 84s.
They were followed by Ethan Nevel of A-C Valley/Union with 85, Weston Kimmey of Moniteau (85), Christo Park of Kane (86), Austen Cogley of DuBois Central Catholic (87), Kolby Montgomery of A-C Valley/Union (87), Hunter Gifford of Karns City (88), Nathan Marterella of Cranberry (88), Ryan Bressler of St. Marys (88), Joshua Craig of Clarion (89), Willie Hoover of Punxsutawney (89), Andrew Gunn of Cranberry (90), Gabe Kraus of Elk Catholic (90) and Lucas Ambler of Punxsutawney (90).
