WARREN — A grand opening ceremony celebrating the completion of the first 10 miles of the Jakes Rocks mountain bike trails on the Allegheny National Forest will be held on Sunday.
The ceremony was originally scheduled for Aug. 13, but was rescheduled due to weather conditions. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m., but after the ceremony, the afternoon will be dedicated to various time trial events. Time trial registration will begin at 10 a.m.
“This project is a true collaborative effort between the Allegheny National Forest and our partners — especially the Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry,” said Forest Supervisor Sherry Tune.
The project’s roots began in 2010, when the Pennsylvania Kinzua Pathways proposed a mountain bike trail project on the forest. Through collaborative partnerships and agreements, the ANF completed the environmental assessment and then signed the decision notice in July 2015.
Officials said the implementation of the project began in late spring of this year and resulted in completing the first 10 miles of the 46-mile trail. The next two phases are expected to be completed in the next two years. When completed, the trail system will include internal loops that vary in difficulty and distance.
”Through everyone’s combined efforts, we will provide exciting new opportunities on the forest that will also benefit our local communities,” said Tune.
For those wishing to attend, here are the directions to the signing ceremony: From Route 59 (near the Morrison Bridge), take Forest Road 262 (Longhouse National Scenic Byway) south to Forest Road 492. At the Jakes Rocks Picnic Area and Overlook entrance sign, take the one lane road leading into the area (right); veer to the right at the intersection and the picnic area is the first parking lot on the left.
