For many patrons, the Bradford Area Public Library will no longer feel like the same facility following the death of “Miss Whispurr,” the library’s resident cat.
Library officials announced the feline’s death on Tuesday.
“Miss Whispurr,” who was 16-years-old, had lived at the library for more than 15 years.
“‘Whispurr’ was a rescue cat brought to the library at six-months-old in December 2000 from the SPCA, and she quickly charmed her way into everyone’s hearts, becoming a much-loved community fixture,” Bradford Area Public Library Executive Director Lacey Love said. “Her name was chosen as the result of a community contest that received over 200 name suggestions. Once the contest was narrowed down to eight finalists, ‘Whispurr’ was the clear winner.”
Love recalled the feline’s favorite activities included sitting on computer keyboards while individuals attempted to work, finding new and interesting hiding places to nap and consuming lots of turkey and roast beef.
“She loved being pet and being fed cat treats by all the children who have come into the library over the past decade and a half. She always put a smile on everybody’s face with her antics over the years, and she will be missed,” Love said.
And “Miss Whispurr” was also featured in a story about 10 library cats published in 2013 at http://mentalfloss.com, as well as on the Purr ‘n’ Fur website that provides biographies of library cats in America.
Donations made in “Whispurr’s” memory will go toward library programming, Love said. Officials are planning to bury the feline’s ashes beside “Dr. Seuss,” a cat that took up residence at the library from 1986 to 2000, in the garden outside the children’s room. A memorial plaque will also be installed.
“Unfortunately, due to upcoming renovations, the library will not be a good home for a pet, and we will be postponing the discussion of getting a new cat,” Love said.
