The Derrick City Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor “Feel the Burn,” a 5K run/walk open to the public, on Aug. 13 at the Derrick City firehall.
The primary purpose of the event is to raise funds for the fire department, according to lead organizer Sierra Campbell.
Registration for “Feel the Burn” begins at 8 a.m., and the race will start at 9 a.m. The cost of registration is $25, and those who pre-register beforehand will receive a guaranteed commemorative t-shirt, explained Campbell.
Light refreshments and snacks will also be served.
An overall male and female winner will be chosen, both of whom will receive a prize, Campbell added.
The Derrick City department Inc. provides fire, rescue and EMS protection to the residents of Foster Township. Made up entirely of volunteers, the department consists of 40 active members who each play a vital role in the day to day operations of the department, which has two stations each containing two apparatuses — Derrick City station on Derrick Road and the Bolivar Drive station.
The department responds to an average of 190 to 200 calls annually, organizers noted, adding the department relies heavily on fundraising from events such as bingo, ham and turkey parties, and this year’s “Feel the Burn” 5K run/walk, in addition to donations, according to Campbell.
She encouraged all who can attend the new event to do so.
