WELLSBORO – Coudersport had opportunities, but defending District 4 champion Wellsboro stretched a 1-0 lead into a 2-0 victory over the Lady Falcons in the completion of their high school softball game that was suspended earlier this season.
Wellsboro was leading by a run going into the top of the second inning when Coudersport loaded the bases and appeared to be in position to take the lead and possibly the win.
“We had the bases loaded with one out, but the bottom of our lineup just could not bring any runs across,” said Dan Counts, Coudersport coach.
The hosts tacked on a second score and then pitcher Alyssa Yungwirth took control of the contest from inside the circle. She replaced starter A. Singer, who was not available to pitch. The pair finished with a two-hitter, had 12 strikeouts and issued just three walks.
“Yungwirth has something like four or five no-hitters this season and is just a sophomore,” Counts explained. “They are a quality team and will probably win their districts again this season.”
Pitching for the Lady Falcons was Shaelyn Black. She surrendered six hits, had no strikeouts and also gave up three walks.
“Shaelyn threw real well,” stated Counts. “She is just a freshman and hasn’t pitched in two weeks. She did an exceptional job today after our loss to Galeton.”
The Lady Falcons’ Macy Gleason had the only extra base hit in the game, a two-out double in the sixth.
“Overall, we played pretty well. We battled well in the late innings, but hit the ball right at people,” Counts explained. “We had just one error, but played pretty good defense against a quality team going into the playoffs.
Coudersport (16-2) will host Elk Catholic on Monday in the first round of the District 9 Class A playoffs.
“Now we have to get through the weekend and come out focused and ready for Elk Catholic,” Counts emphasized.
