PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney used a five-run first inning and a six-run third inning to put away Bradford 15-5 in six innings of high school baseball Wednesday.
Peyton Graham and Brandon Matthews pitched for the Chucks (2-3). They allowed eight hits, struck out seven and issued three base-on-balls.
Andrew Bacha suffered the mound loss. Bacha, Connor Vecellio and Kyle Kirk allowed 16 hits, struck out one and walked five.
Bradford came out strong in the top of the first inning with Vecellio blasting a two-run home run for the Owls (0-1) and Dan Manion ripping an RBI single, to take a 3-0 lead.
“We came out with a bang scoring the three runs, but in the bottom of the inning Punxsy answered us,” said Brian Fox, Bradford coach. “We had two errors which they capitalized on and scored five runs. We had no answer for them the rest of the game.”
The Owls did come up with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but they were too little, too late. Vecellio also had an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the game.
“Punxsy just hit the ball and never looked back,” Fox stated. “Now we have to put this one behind us and just move on to the next one.”
For the Chucks, Lucas Ambler smacked an RBI double and Dylan Huey a two-run base hit.
Bradford will return to action Friday hosting Warren at the Derrick City field.
