NAPOLI, N.Y. — A Little Valley woman died in a motorcycle accident late Monday evening.
As Jennifer S. Bumpus, 35, was driving her 2005 Honda motorcycle east on Route 242 at approximately 8:25 p.m., she struck a cow that was in the roadway. A second motorcycle, a 2013 Honda, driven by Derrek W. Livermore, 23, of Conewango, struck Bumpus’ motorcycle and came to a rest on the shoulder of the road.
Both Bumpus and Livermore were riding together, said Acting Undersheriff Robert Buchhardt of the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office
Authorities pronounced Bumpus dead at the scene. A Mercy Flight medical helicopter transported Livermore to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa. Police report Livermore sustained injuries to his back, legs and neck.
Livermore was treated and released from the hospital overnight, Buchhardt said.
“Unfortunately cows get out all the time, that’s not uncommon in Cattaraugus County,” he said, noting the cow died from the accident as well. “We get a lot of calls about (livestock) getting out and wandering around.”
Buchhardt said he was unaware of who owned the cow, but that those investigating the accident have likely located the farmer.
No charges have been filed.
“A farmer does have an obligation to keep his animals contained in a pasture … and if the animal’s owner was negligent, he could be charged with reckless endangerment,” Buchhardt said. “But right now, there’s a lot of ‘what if’s.’”
