OLEAN, N.Y. — Olean’s Social Security office, located at 175 N. Union St., resumes normal operations at 9 a.m. Thursday.
The facility in Blue Bird Square closed abruptly on Sept. 22 after several employees developed rashes and hives. Social Security officials said none of those affected displayed other serious conditions.
A federal occupational health industrial hygienist inspected the facility and took samples to determine what caused the reaction.
“After a thorough inspection of our office by an industrial hygienist, no definitive cause was found that might explain our employees’ symptoms,” said John Shallman, a Social Security spokesperson. “The inspection did uncover some minor issues such as exposed insulation in a utility closet and some excess equipment gathering dust. In addition, some adjustments to the HVAC system are needed to ensure that all vents are functioning properly.”
Officials at Park Centre Development, which owns the building and is headquartered nearby, were made aware of the situation. After inspectors completed their work and gave an OK, Park Centre had the facility thoroughly cleaned, said Vicki Blessing, the real estate firm’s vice president.
Throughout Tuesday afternoon, cleaning crews could be spotted carrying boxes out of the facility. Blessing said that activity was an additional “spring cleaning” of sorts for the office.
