The Community Nurses will hold flu shot clinics at all senior centers in Elk, Cameron and McKean counties in October to ensure the senior population has convenient access to this yearly immunization.
This year, the Community Nurses will use quadrivalent flu vaccine for flu immunizations.
The schedule is as follows: From 10 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 5 at the St. Marys Senior Center; 1 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 5, Fox Township Senior Center; 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 6, Jones Township Senior Center; 1 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 6, Johnsonburg Senior Center; 9:30 to 11 a.m. Oct. 7, Eldred Senior Center; 1 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 7, Bradford Senior Activity Center; 1 to 2:30 Oct. 8, Bennetts Valley Senior Center; 10 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 12, Kane Senior Center; 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Oct. 12, Mount Jewett Senior Center; 10 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 13, Port Allegany Senior Center; 1 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 13, Smethport Senior Center; 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 14, Driftwood Senior Center; and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 14, Emporium Senior Center.
Community Nurses can bill the shot to Medicare Part B if it’s the primary insurance, as well as the following Medicare HMOs: American Progressive, Freedom Blue, Humana, UPMC for Life and Security Blue. Participants are asked to bring their insurance cards.
Otherwise, the cost for a shot is $30.
The quadrivalent flu vaccine is designed to protect against four different flu viruses, including two influenza A viruses and two influenza B viruses. As with the trivalent vaccine, quadrivalent vaccine cannot cause influenza illness because the vaccine viruses used to make it are inactivated (killed) or attenuated (weakened).
