BEIRUT (AP) — The spokesman for the Islamic State group has promised victory despite a string of recent setbacks in Syria.
IS spokesman Abu Mohammed al-Adnani said in an audio message circulated by supporters on Tuesday that “God never gave the mujahedeen a promise of victory every time,” adding that the faithful “may lose a battle or battles and may lose towns and areas but will never be defeated.”
He appeared to be referring to a string of setbacks in Syria, where Kurdish fighters have seized a key border crossing and have been advancing toward the IS group’s de facto capital, Raqqa.
Al-Adnani called on Sunni Muslims to “attack them everywhere and shake the ground beneath them.”
It was not immediately possible to verify the recording but it resembled previous audio statements from the group.
