WINTER HAVEN, Fla — Cole Peterson had quite the collegiate debut Friday for the St. Bonaventure University baseball team.
Peterson, a freshman shortstop and former Johnsonburg High star, came up with a pair of huge defensive plays in the Bonnies’ 3-1 win over Maine in the first of four games with the Black Bears to open the season.
With the Bonnies up 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth and runners on first and second for Maine, Luke Morrill hit a line drive to Peterson, who caught it and promptly stepped on second base for a game-ending double-play.
Also, in the fifth inning, with the score knotted 1-1, Peterson made a diving stop with runners on to end the inning and a potential run-scoring play.
Tyler Bell drove in Thad Johnson to give the Bonnies a 2-1 lead in the sixth and the Bonnies (1-0) tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth as pinch-hitter Danny Urban tripled to lead off the inning and came home on Tyler Kirwan’s RBI single.
The Bonnies will battle Maine again today at 1 p.m.
