ICE-O-RAMA — Looking for a way to get outside for a bit? We know we’ve been cooped up in our house for weeks and would take about any excuse to get out in the sunshine for a bit.
Three words: Giant Ice Shark.
This Saturday is the Ice-O-Rama at Lyman Run State Park in Galeton, hosted by the Friends of Lyman Run. The event, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., includes a chance for visitors to see “the huge fin of the Giant Ice Shark (Lymanensis carnivorus),” among other activities. This is according to Friends of Lyman Run State Park.
“This legendary creature was thought to be extinct but evidence of its existence was discovered while the new Lyman Lake dam was being constructed,” a press release from the group stated.
We don’t know what this is, but we are intrigued. Organizers say guests have to attend to learn how it got there and whether it continues to lurk under the ice …
Other activities include sledding for those who bring their own sleds, cross-country skiing clinics, snowshoeing, snowmobile rides from the God’s Country Black Forest Snowmobile Club and family-friendly ice fishing clinics.
People should bring their own sleds, and cross-country ski availability is limited, in case visitors have their own to bring. Other equipment will be provided.
For the tech savvy of you out there, a fish phone app can be found at Vexilar, iTunes or Google Play that show live footage of underwater cameras at the lake looking for signs of the creature. Organizers warn there is no Wi-Fi at the park, so people have to download the app before attending if they want to watch there.
Free tickets, an event schedule and maps will be available at the park’s information trailer. With the ticket, children will be able to earn a shark tooth for participating in activities at the event.
Hot chocolate, coffee and soup will be available for purchase in the park pavilion.
Events like this are always more fun if you dress for the weather, too.
Giant Ice Shark. Super fun.
We’re almost through January, folks. Spring will be here before you know it.
NEXT TIME: Speaking of snowshoes, a reader had more information about a local native we wrote about a few weeks ago. We talked about handcrafted snowshoes the fellow made, but apparently he has many more talents. More about that on Tuesday.
