DUBOIS — Bri Wells had the hot hand Wednesday night!
The Bradford sophomore scored a career-high 29 points to key the Lady Owls’ 45-36 victory over DuBois in girls District 9 League basketball action.
Wells clicked on 11 field goals and was 6-for-8 from the freethrow line. Her performance drew well-earned praise from head coach Bob Hannon.
“Bri just had a monster game,” Hannon declared. “She had one of the best games by a player that I’ve seen since I’ve been here.”
The visiting Lady Owls and the Lady Beavers battled to a 10-10 draw after one periord of play before Bradford began to take control of the contest.
In the second quarter the Lady Owls opened up a three-point advantage, 13-10, which sent them into the locker room at halftime leading 23-20.
Bradford took advantage of DuBois’ shooting woes in the third stanza, pushing its lead to 11 points, 36-25, headed into the final eight minutes of play.
The Lady Beavers picked up two points in the fourth stanza, but they were too little, too late.
“This was the best game we’ve played this year,” pointed out Hannon, whose team has struggled this season getting just its third win to improve to 3-9. “The girls played as a team with a lot of heart and intensity. It was a nice effort and I am extremely proud of the way they played … they played hard.”
The Lady Owls coach also praised the play of Kam Piscitelli, Brinya Moffett and Raya Hennigan.
“We got great contributions from Piscitelli and Moffet and Hennigan got a lot of offensive rebounds for us. This was a good win for us,” he noted.
Hannon is seeing steady improvement by his team, but they will be challengerd on Friday night at Punxsutawney.
“Friday will be a big test for us,” Hannon emphasized. “That game will be a tough one … the biggest for us since the beginning of the new year.”
High scorer in the game for DuBois was Dayna Desalve with 12 points.
