PORT ALLEGANY — Trailing 25-18 at halftime, Smethport coach Eric Lutz knew that the law of averages supported that his club would make more shots in the second half.
He was proven right, as the Lady Hubbers outscored Galeton 29-13 in the second half en route to a 47-38 win.
“We were 5-of-34 in the first half and they were 9-of-19,” Lutz noted. “I told the girls at halftime that we can’t keep missing these shots, they’re going to start to fall. In the second half that showed.”
Morgan Okerlund continued her solid play with 17 points to lead the now 5-1 Lady Hubbers, while Rachael Duffy added 10.
“The whole team contributed today,” noted Lutz. “Everybody that got in scored. We had people in foul trouble and people off the bench stepped up. The girls showed a lot of battle and toughness. This was a good team win.”
MaKayla Shadle led Galeton (2-4) with 14 points, while Latascia Shadle, the top scorer in the early going of the season among North Tier League teams, finished with 12.
Next up for Smethport is a rematch with the host Lady Gators in the championship game today (6 p.m.).
The two teams are already quite familiar with one another this season, as Port handed the Lady Hubs their only loss of the young season, 58-45 on Dec. 16.
“I told the girls everybody knows what’s going to happen,” Lutz said. “We know what they’re going to do and they know what we’re going to do. It’s just a matter of who does it better.”
