JOHNSTOWN — Freshman guard Cameron Grumley (Johnsonburg) scored 17 points for Clarion, but it wasn’t enough, as the Golden Eagles fell to 1-2 on the season with a 82-77 loss at Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday.
The 17 points mark a career best in Grumley’s young Clarion career.
Clarion, which trailed by as many as 17, 61-44 with 11:58 remaining, cut the deficit to one, 64-63, on a free throw by Justin Grant with 5:31 to go.
UPJ responded, however, with a 12-5 run to seize control.
Matt Palo led the winners (2-0) with 22 points, while Ajan Smith added 18.
Grumley, meanwhile, was one of four Golden Eagles in double figures, led by Kyheim Hall’s 20 points and 12 rebounds. Tony Gates and Brandon Williams had 13 points apiece.
Included in Grumley’s stat line were three rebounds (all offensive) and two steals. He shot 6-of-8 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from three-point range.
Clarion returns to action Sunday, hosting Carlow (4 p.m.).
