ALPINE: Clayton Vecellio of Lewis Run also remembers the Alpine ice cream shop that used to be open on Main Street in Bradford.
We mentioned in Saturday’s column that a reader recalled the shop was run by a man named Curtis Tracy, who was a department head at Bradford High School.
“I also agree he owned the Alpine on Main Street,” said Clayton. “It was very clean and had lots of colorful tables and chairs with the customary circular stools at the spotless counter. The was a very popular meeting place for all ages.”
Clayton passed along this photo of Curtis Tracy, which he said appeared in the 1947 Bradford High School “Barker” year book.
The caption under the yearbook photo states that Mr. Tracy worked for the vocational department.
Clayton said Mr. Tracy was “very well respected” in the community.
Clayton also shared some tidbits about another similar business he and his buddies used to frequent.
“Another fine establishment was Neillys Dairy Bar at 585 South Ave. next door to where AAA is now. It was very busy in the late 1940s and 1950s. A bunch of us guys and gals were regular patrons 2 or 3 nights a week.
“I can attest they made the best hamburgers and biggest banana splits anywhere.
“Around 1960 it was purchased by Mr. Ivan Regis,” Clayton wrote. He wasn’t sure how long Ivan ran the store.
“After that I believe it was some sort of musical store.
“The building still stands. I pass by it at least 2 to 3 a week and I reminisce at all the good food and times our gang had there.
“Ah, memories.”
Another reader brought by a couple of souvenirs from the Alpine that we will share with readers on Wednesday.
