The Bradford High tennis duo of Hannah Burgoon and Ashley Stoltz had to battle the elements and a change of venue — and still almost won a District 9 championship.
Burgoon and Stoltz fell in the District 9 Class AA Doubles Championship, 6-4, 6-2 to Anna Brinkley and Taylor Hepler of Brockway.
Brockway was up 5-4 when heavy rains started falling at Pitt-Bradford, causing the match to be moved indoors to the St. Bonaventure Racket Club.
From there, the Brockway duo outlasted Burgoon and Stoltz for the title.
Burgoon and Stoltz actually were impressive in their run to the semifinals, beating Tayler Wisor and Sarah Hazel of Clearfield 10-3 in the opening round, followed by a 10-4 win over Hannah Wittman and Sophie Viglione of Elk County Catholic in the quarterfinals.
The semifinal match saw the Lady Owl duo lost the first set, 6-3 to Amber Ward and Emma White of Punxsy, only to rally, as the format switch from one set to 10 to the more traditional three-set format.
Burgoon and Stoltz came back and won the second set 6-4 and finished off the victory with a 6-2 win in the third set.
Bradford’s other doubles team, Mandy Droney and Katelyn Wells, fell to Andrea Allegretto and Olivia Perez-McGill in the first round, 10-2.
