American Refining Group is the first local business to take advantage of Byllye Lanes’ wellness bowling program.
With a good balance of half fun and half wellness, this is not a typical wellness league — organizations choose when and how often to meet.
Together, Steve Feldman, proprietor of Byllye Lanes, and his son Justin Feldman, coordinator, are teaming up to create wellness programs for local groups and businesses, the first two being ARG and Relay For Life.
Organizers said there are some significant advantages to forming a team with co-workers, including improved physical health and saving money on health care costs.
Justin Feldman spoke with The Era about his research findings relating to the advantages of a company wellness program.
Some of Feldman’s research suggests that co-workers who double as team members are more well-minded, which in turn creates a happier, more productive work environment with less absenteeism.
“A wellness league can add so much value to a business,” Feldman said. “This is a time when people can come out and enjoy themselves, build morale and get healthy.”
Feldman shared that one game of bowling burns 240 calories. With continuous physical activity, overall health improves, which can lower company health care costs.
There is no limit to how many members a business can have on a team, and in some games, only nine pins are needed for a strike.
With a cost of $10 to $15 per person, and an average meeting time of once a month, the benefits of promoting wellness within a business highly outweigh the costs of a game.
