Workers from several agencies worked together on Tuesday to clean-up an oil spill in Willow Creek in Corydon Township.
Bruce Manning, director of the McKean County Emergency Management Agency, explained that crews were called out about 9 a.m. to an oil spill in Willow Creek along West Washington Street not far from the fire station in Corydon Township.
On scene were people from the Corydon and Bradford Township volunteer fire departments, McKean County EMA, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
Altogether, around 13 to 15 barrels of material spilled, with 42 gallons per barrel, said Manning.
Corydon Township volunteer fire chief Matt Cobb explained the oil leaked from a line that was broken that was connected to a stock tank. Cobb said the spill was accidental.
Manning said workers installed seven booms across the creek over a mile to mile and a half length to absorb and contain the oil. “We were able to get it contained,” and a “vast majority” of the oil was absorbed, he said.
Manning said a contractor was on scene cleaning the area when the containment crews left in the early afternoon, and he expected the contractor would likely be finished within a couple of days, if not by the end of Tuesday.
Officials were not sure who owned the land, and the name of the oil tank owner has not been released. The DEP is investigating.
