A summer job can be a positive and rewarding experience for a teenager. Your son or daughter can make new friends, learn responsibility, and earn some money. Here are five tips to help make your teen’s summer job a success.
1: Location, location, location
Location is one of the most important things to consider, especially if you will be driving the child to and from work. Look at jobs close to home first, and then broaden the search as needed. Consider opportunities within walking distance from your home, and also jobs with access to public transportation.
2: Inquire about the hours upfront
During the interview process, encourage your teen to ask about the hours. Some jobs, such as those at restaurants, require early mornings or late nights. The number of anticipated hours each week is important too, and should align with your child’s schedule and expectations.
3: Safety is critical
If you are unsure, don’t be afraid to ask about any potential dangers in the job. While there are laws to protect minors from really dangerous positions, many kids are drawn to and enjoy active jobs such as landscaping, where the potential for injury may be greater. Encourage your child to use proper safety equipment, such as eye and ear protection, when appropriate.
4: Disclose vacation plans
It is important for your teen to tell his potential employer about any vacation plans. Just as you would expect the employer to disclose the hours and safety details of the position, it is equally important that your teen set expectations about any planned vacations or other schedule limitations.
5: Consider the future
A summer job can be rewarding and fun, and it also looks good on a resume or college application. Look for jobs that relate to future aspirations, so your teen can get a taste of potential careers. From the financial side, they can also begin to save money for college.
