SMETHPORT — Smethport softball coach Dr. Jim Kane feels his Lady Hubbers are finally getting their momentum back.
There are 11 reasons why their opponents are pretty certain it was never lost.
Friday afternoon the Lady Hubbers pushed their record to 11-1 with a doubleheader sweep of the Galeton Lady Tigers. Smethport won the first game 7-0 and the nigthcap 16-2 in five innings.
Brooke Kane-Walker picked up the mound win in both contests.
In the opener she scattered four hits, walked two batters and recorded 12 strikeouts.
At the plate for the Lady Hubbers, Tierra Johnson had three hits, Kane-Walker helped herself with a double, and Allysa Larson, Quinn Burdick and Torri Johnson each had two hits.
Latascia Shadle and Matya MacPherson shared mound duties for the Lady Tigers. They surrendered 14 hits, issued five walks and recorded four strikeouts.
Galeton’s top hitter was Brown with a double.
In the second game, Kane-Walker made it tougher for the Lady Tigers to reach base. She allowed just three hits and issued one walk while accounting for 12 of Galeton’s 15 outs via strikeouts over five innings of work.
Smethport broke the game open with a 14-run fifth inning sparked by Sarah Vinca’s three-run home run. Vinca went 3-for-4 in the game. Burdick also played a key role in the big frame with a two-run double.
Burdick had a second double in the game as well while collecting three hits, Nicole Nolte recorded three hits, and Tori Transue, Torri Johnson and Kane-Walker all had two hits each.
“That accounted for 15 of our 16 hits in the second game,” Coach Kane noted. “Galeton (7-6) is a good team. We’re starting to play much better ball. We’re regaining some of our momentum and reestablishing our stride after the days off.”
The Shadle-MacPherson duo also suffered the mound loss in the second game. They were tagged for the 16 hits, had two strikeouts and gave up two walks.
Smethport returns to action on Monday at home with DuBois Central Catholic.
“DuBois CC is one of the premier teams in the southern part of the district,” Coach Kane pointed out.
