ST. MARYS — Elk County Catholic’s Abbey Bauer put a perfect game in the book Friday to lead the Lady Crusaders to a 14-0 victory over Bradford in high school softball action.
Bauer needed only 5 innings of work to keep the Lady Owls winless on the season at 0-9. She recorded nine strikeouts in the game and did not give up a walk.
Backing her was an eight-run first inning sparked by a pair of two-run singles off the bats of Maddy Schneider and Marisa Henry. They were the only two ECC hits in the frame, but the hosts sandwiched them around five walks.
“We spotted them the eight runs and that was just too deep a hole,” said Geraldine Lacney, Bradord coach. “Bauer also pitched very well and kept us off-balance the whole time.”
Bauer helped herself at the plate with a two-run double in the second inning that increased Elk’s lead to 10-0.
Sophie Yanak ripped a two-run single in the fourth as the Lady Crusaders increased their lead to 14 runs.
The losing pitcher for Bradford was Kylee Schaumleffel, who gave up seven hits and had nine strikeouts. She also issued nine walks in her four innings of work.
“It’s a learning process,” Lacney noted. “We just have to tough it out, play hard and keep giving the effort. Our time will come when the bats start making contact.”
Bradford returns to action Monday at DuBois Central Catholic.
