JOHNSONBURG — Bradford High pulled off an early-season baseball stunner Friday afternoon.
The Owls, facing one of the top pitchers in the area in Johnsnburg’s Cole Peterson, scored three runs in the fifth inning and then added three more in the seven on the way to a 6-4 victory over the Rams.
Peterson, who threw a shutout in last season’s Class A state championship game, had things his way going into the fifth when Bradford’s bats started connecting. Connor Vecellio (2-for-3) ripped a two-run single and the Owls put three runs on the board.
“Those three runs in the fifth started our scoring,” said Brian Fox, Bradford coach.
Peterson came back out for the sixth frame, but in the 7th Cameron Grumley took the mound. It did litttle good, however. Brandon Stoltz ripped a two-run single and Bradford tacked on three more runs to pull off the upset.
“Offensively we got good contact off one of the best pitchers in the area,” Fox emphasized. “He (Peterson) and Brandon Schlimm (Elk County Catholic) are the two best pitchers in this area.”
Bradford’s Ryan Boyer moved up a notch himself.
Boyer worked six innings and recorded 15 strikeouts. Andrew Bacha came on in the seventh and also recorded a strikeout. The pair limited the Rams to five hits and walked just one batter.
“Boyer pitched an exceptional game,” Fox praised. “He did not give up any runs and you can’t asked much more from a guy than 15 strikeouts in six innings of work.”
At the plate for the Owls, Sawyer Patrick went 2-for-2 with two RBIs in the game and Bryce Skaggs slapped a double.
Peterson and Grumley gave up seven hits, had 10 strikeouts and issued seven walks
Tyler Feronti doubled in the first inning for the Rams, now 4-4 on the season.
Bradford, now 2-6, hosts Brookville at the Pitt Field on Monday.
