The Bradford Chess Club has reported that St. Bernard Elementary School finished in fifth place overall among the 19 schools participating in the recent 2014 Pennsylvania Elementary State Scholastic Chess Championships.
Participants of the team included Cadence Panol, who earned the first place award among all unrated players; Tim Mulcahy, who finished second among all unrated players; Kara Longo; and Bailey Fry.
The event was part of the annual State Scholastic Championships that took place March 8-9 at the Hotel Carlisle & Embers Convention Center in Carlisle.
This is the first time the St. Bernard school has participated in the state championships in nearly 20 years. Members of the team are already looking forward to the event in 2015, which will be held in Lancaster.
