KANE — Jim Manners Award winner David Reinhardt and the rest of
his Bradford teammates continued the Owls’ domination of the
District 9 Class AAA track and field championship meet on Wednesday
at Kane High School.
Bradford piled up 151 points to claim its 12th straight district
title. DuBois finished a distant second with 81 points, followed by
Punxsutawney with 72, St. Marys with 38 and Clearfield with 33.
“This meet was all about our guys getting two or three places in
most events,” said Tom Tessena, Bradford coach. The Owls actually
scored points in 17 of the 18 events. The only event they did not
score points in was the 100.
“Our coaching staff is extremely proud of these young men. They
worked hard to achieve this 12th straight district championship. In
every event someone came up with his best performance,” Tessena
declared.
Reinhardt was the top seed in his three events – shot put,
discus and javelin – and won all of them to accumulate 24 points
toward his boys’ outstanding athlete of the meet award. Each
individual first place was worth eight points.
“David’s throw in the discus (151’2’’) is the 7th best throw on
our all-time list,” Tessena pointed out. “With his three firsts he
had a great day.”
Second place in the battle for the Manners’ award went to Nick
Wehrle of Punxsutawney with 21 points. He just edged out
Reinhardt’s teammate Cody Coats, who finished with 20.
Coats, a junior, actually quadrupled in the meet. He won the 200
dash, the 300 hurdles and was a member of Bradford’s two winning
relay teams (1600 and 3200). He scored 16 points with the two
individual firsts, but had to share first place points with the
other members of his relay squads, giving him only four points, to
finish with 20.
“Cody won two exciting races,” Tessena noted. “He beat Bob Huff
of DuBois in a photo finish to win the intermediate hurdles in
39.59. Then 10 minutes later he again beat Huff and Punxy’s Nick
Werhle in just as close a finish in the 200 meters (23.24).”
Twins Michael and Matthew White each recorded triples in the
meet. Both were members of the Owls’ winning relay teams, while
Michael won the 800 run and Matthew the 1600 run.
Nate Burrow completed the 1600 relay squad and Adam Barnes the
3200 relay team.
“In the pole vault Brandon Teribery set a new freshman record
with an incredible jump of 13’6’’,” Tessena noted.“That is the 4th
best all-time jump for us so the sky is the limit for Brandon if he
keeps working hard like he has this year.
“Senior Mike Marasco saved his best jump for today and he won
the long jump for us with a 20’4.5’’ leap. Rich Obermeyer had his
best jump to place 3rd in the triple jump. He went 40’1 1/2’’ and
just missed first by six inches.
“Our hurdlers were tough today. We had three places in both
hurdles. Ryan Breznik placed 3rd in the high hurdles and 3rd in the
intermediates. Both were personal bests. Nate Burrow placed 4th and
freshman David Ackerman was 5th in the highs, and sophomore Zach
Britton was 4th in the intermediates (41.65) for another personal
best.
“Our distance people were strong as well with freshman Aziz
Yousif taking 4th in both the 1600 and 3200. Another freshman Cody
Cobb was 5th in the 3200 (10:52.93) for his best time of the
year.
“Junior Seth Morrisroe place 4th in the 400, Cody Nuzzo placed
5th in the 200 and anchored the 4×100 relay team of Zach Britton,
Mike Marasco and Ryan Breznik to a 3rd place finish. Adam Barnes
placed 2nd in the 3200.
“We got 2nd and 5th in the pole vault with Preston Murrell and
Gage Bunker. Zach Vleminckx tied for 3rd in the high jump, while
David Ackerman took 5th. Another freshman Pat Asinger also jumped
5’7″.
“We did well in the throws,” Tessena continued. “We swept the
shot put behind Reinhardt, with Troy Reed taking 2nd and Zach
Hoffman 3rd. Reed also placed 3rd in the javelin and sophomore Cody
Mascho had a personal best to take 4th in 156’5’’. Hoffman also
placed 3rd in the discus, Pat (Asinger) had a personal best in the
triple jump with 37’11 3/4’’ (7th), David Ackerman placed 8th and
William Dong ran the 100 and 200 for us today.
“A lot of our underclassmen did well today and our coaches
(Ashley Fox, Mark Kelley, Scott Mealy, Larry Stillman and Matt
Teribery) all did another great job this season,” Tessena
emphasized.
The Owls will send 13 members of their team to states next
week.
