SALAMANCA, N.Y. — An Erie, Pa., woman died after she hit a tree
while snow tubing at the summit area of Allegany State Park on
Sunday.
At 1:50 p.m., Trisha E. Lewis, 33, was tubing with her family at
a hill near Route 1 on the Red House side of the park when her tube
hit a tree, according to Allegany State Park Police. Witnesses
administered first aid.
Paramedics rushed Lewis to Olean General Hospital, where she was
pronounced dead, police said.
The sledding area has been closed pending the results of an
investigation by state park police, police said. Authorities said
the area where Lewis and her family were tubing has an elevation of
2,100 feet above sea level.
Seneca Nation of Indians and City of Salamanca emergency
personnel assisted, police said.
Authorities said this is the first accident in the recent past
where somebody died in the park.
