JOHNSONBURG (EC) – The Johnsonburg Area School Board passed a
“testing out” policy during their monthly meeting Thursday
night.
The policy would allow a student to take a test in a core
subject – English, science, history and math. Should the student
pass the test with a score of 86 percent or higher, the grade would
count toward the student’s grade point average and credit toward
graduation. If the student would score lower than 86 percent, then
the student would have to take the class at the next available
opportunity.
Testing requests must be submitted to the administration between
April 15 and May 15, and students must take the test between the
end of the school year and July 15. The course instructor would
provide a textbook/workbook and the final exam, and would correct
the exam.
In order for this year’s senior class to advantage of the
program, they and underclass members should request a test and have
it taken by Sept. 14th, the board decided. Students cannot make the
request; parents are responsible for that action. The test should
only be taken if the parent and child feel the student knows enough
about the subject to take the exam.
Lance Rezmerski, a parent attending the meeting, had questions
about the policy. Rezmerski asked how prepared a student would be
for taking a test if school begins on Aug. 29 and the exam must be
taken by Sept. 14. He told the board it would be a short span of
roughly 11 school days.
Walter Fitch, district superintendent, told Rezmerski the
student could take the exam if he or she felt they had the knew
enough to take a test.
It was announced at the meeting there will be a public meeting
on the curriculum on Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. at the high school. This
would include the testing out policy.
In other board news, the board passed an amended Special
Education Program budget for the 2007-08 school year in the amount
of ,828,800.
The board voted to hire Mark Kuhar as outside council for issues
relating to Labor Issues. Kuhar works out of Erie and has worked
with the board before. His rate will be ,140 per hour.
The board also granted permission to advertise for bids for a
new dump truck.
