FANNIE ROSS: Fannie Ross celebrates her 100th birthday today.
Quite an accomplishment![neWLine]
To mark the occasion, the Borough of Lewis Run has declared
today “”Fannie Ross Day.”” Fannie was born in Lewis Run on June 18,
1907, and lived her entire life in that community until a recent
move to The Pavilion at Bradford Regional Medical
Center.[neWLine]
In addition, a 100th birthday party has been scheduled for 2-4
p.m. today at the Bradford Club, hosted by her son, grandchildren,
brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. Fannie is a retired
seamstress and homemaker.[neWLine][neWLine]
MIDWAY NOTE: Mike McCoy writes, “”Reading the recent RTS
articles about this being the 63rd anniversary of the D-Day
invasion on June 6 made me think about the other enormously
significant WWII battle anniversary that shares that date, the Navy
battle of Midway Island, June 6, 1942. This is the 65th
anniversary.””[neWLine]
“”As I understand it, the Japanese intended to finish off what
was left of the US Navy Pacific Fleet once and for all, but the
Navy had broken the Japanese code and learned of the planned
attack, and although vastly outnumbered and outgunned faced off
against the Japanese fleet, sinking four out of their total of five
aircraft carriers.[neWLine]
“”History tells us from that moment on the Japanese were forced
to suddenly shift from an offensive attacking mode and go on the
defensive for the rest of the war.[neWLine]
“”There is a large and inspiring grave marker at the very
highest part of the St. Bernard Cemetery (old section) marking the
grave of a 1Lt (USN) who was killed in the battle of Midway on June
6, 1942.[neWLine]
“”I remember my father showing it to me as a child and reading
the inscription which read something about him and ‘showing extreme
courage under fire.’ I wish I could remember his name but I cannot.
I’ll go and look at it again next time I visit in
Bradford.””[neWLine][neWLine]
TODAY’S QUOTE: “”Superman has to manufacture pain, suffering and
anguish in order to feel human, which is why he chose journalism,””
said Kevin Smith, journalism professor, Fairmont State University,
2006.[neWLine]
We must admit that today’s quote is the best one we’ve seen in
the years we’ve been reading them. Then again, we’ve had a life of
journalism’s woes to validate the sentiment.
