KANE – A man wanted by the Genesee County (N.Y.) Sheriff’s
Office on a charge of reckless endangerment turned himself in
Sunday afternoon at the Kane-based state police barracks in Hamlin
Township.
Howard Robert Strait, 30, turned himself in at 4:45 p.m., and
was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Michael Kennedy in
Kane on an arrest prior to requisition charge, according to police.
He was committed to the McKean County Jail in Smethport in lieu of
$100,000 bail, and is awaiting extradition to New York state.
State police and McKean County law enforcement agencies were
assisting Genesee County sheriff’s deputies in searching for
Strait, who was wanted for questioning in an incident Saturday
afternoon in the Town of Pembroke, N.Y.
According to Genesee County sheriff’s deputies, a call came into
the sheriff’s office emergency dispatch center at 3:47 p.m.
Saturday. The cellular 911 call stated a male subject, later
described as being Strait, was standing outside a residence on
Alleghany Road in Pembroke, pointing a rifle at the occupants
inside. Upon the deputies’ arrival, the residents stated Strait had
left, running in a westerly direction into a field.
Deputies, along with assistance from the Village of Corfu (N.Y.)
Police Department and New York State Police, deployed a perimeter
of the immediate area. Also used in the search of the area was the
sheriff’s office K-9 and the New York State Police Aviation Unit.
Officers were unable to locate the subject.
The sheriff’s office is continuing its investigation into the
case. Deputies were looking to speak to Strait, who was believed to
reside in Pennsylvania.
Kane-based state police said Strait was wanted for reckless
endangerment in the first-degree, a felony charge, and was
considered to be armed and dangerous during the search for him.
