When the visiting team’s line score reads 0, 6, 4, 5 it’s a good
sign for the home team.
Such was the case Friday night at the Owls’ Nest as the Bradford
High Lady Owls scored 51 points and won by 36, 51-15, over the
struggling DuBois Lady Beavers.
Fortunately for DuBois, BHS shot only 32 percent (22-for-69) in
the game or the margin could’ve been much worse.
The Lady Owls put nine players in the scoring column in the
bench-clearing rout and were led by senior forward Whitney Cline.
Number 21 led all scorers with 12 points, inching ever closer to
joining the elite 1,000-point club.
Cline also pulled down nine boards, while junior guard Shelly
Fuhrman tallied 11 points and Meghan Perschke netted eight marks.
Point guard Nikki Siffrinn collected eight points and six assists,
Kayla Murphey corralled six rebounds and Tricia Copeland
contributed six steals and three assists.
“It was a good team win for us,” maintained Doug Lloyd, BHS
coach. “Everybody got a chance to play even though I wanted to save
the JV girls for tomorrow (today) when they play Olean in the
championship of the JV IAABO Tournament.”
Spark plug Katie White ignited the hosts coming up with a steal,
a deflection and four points in the game’s first minute.
“Katie is always active defensively – it’s amazing what she can
do,” Lloyd declared. “She and Tricia can change a game with their
speed and quickness.
Perschke closed the first quarter with an offensive rebound
stick-back and flashed through the paint for two more on a nice
bounce-pass from Cline and it was 12-0 after one.
Perschke netted the second quarter’s first points at the 5:42
mark.
DuBois got on the board with 3:16 left in the first half on a
foul shot by Rachel Hicks.
Siffrinn’s fade-away jumper with three seconds to go made it
16-6 Lady Owls at the intermission.
Cline got Bradford’s offense going in the third quarter, scoring
10 of her 12 points in the period to help BHS outscore DuBois
23-4.
Brittni Wiseman stretched the margin to 31 points with 7:30
showing in the game and Cline made it 33 at 43-10 on a nice post
move with her back to the basket.
Then Fuhrman went 3-for-4 at the line, Britani VanScoter sealed
her defender at the block for the bucket and a Murphey basket
closed out the hosts’ scoring.
The Lady Owls shot the ball much better in the second half,
converting 14 of 31 attempts (45 percent).
“We were 8-for-38 (21 percent) in the first half,” Lloyd pointed
out. “We didn’t shoot very well and their defense sort of threw us
off a little bit.
“In the second half we attacked the basket more and didn’t
settle for the jump shot. We pushed the ball up the floor and got
easy baskets.
“The way Nikki Siffrinn sees the floor, if we get out and run
she’ll get it to us.”
Lloyd also praised the play of VanScoter.
“Britani does a nice job defensively with her long arms. She
causes problems for teams at the top of our defense.”
The Lady Owls (9-5 overall, 4-2 league) will take the court
again Tuesday at Elk County Catholic (also 4-2 league) to decide
second place in the D-9 season standings.
