Lady Owls defeat Lady Bisons

CLEARFIELD - Tricia Copeland poured in a game-high 18 points to send Bradford to a 54-36 win over Clearfield in the Lady Owls’ regular season finale Monday night.

Katie White added 12 tallies for Bradford (9-13).

Despite the win, the Lady Owls will be on the road in the District 9 Class AAA semifinals. Bradford will travel to Punxsutawney for a 7 p.m. game Friday. The winner will play St. Marys for the title next week.

The Lady Chucks were made the second seed after having a better power rating (3.33) than Bradford (2.93).

Bradford and Punxsutawney had identical league records (5-7) and split the season series. As a result, a power rating was used to decide the seeding. The power rating was based on games through Feb. 5, according to Jim Manners, District 9 basketball chairperson.

Therefore, Bradford’s last two wins - Friday against DuBois and Monday’s win over Clearfield - do not go toward the power rating.

Power ratings are used to rate teams according to class. A team gets 2 points for playing a Class AAAA school, 1.5 points for playing a AAA school, 1 point for playing a AA school and .5 point for playing an A school.

Commenting on Monday’s victory, Bradford coach Doug Lloyd said, “We shot the ball well. Tricia and Katie were really on. Them hitting their shots was big for us. They did a nice job the whole game.”

Katelyn Morris had eight rebounds, White seven boards and Copeland six rebounds. Erica Siffrinn was credited with five steals.

“Defensively, Erica played a nice game,” Lloyd noted. “Offensively, she had some nice drives.”

The coach also praised the play of Shelly Fuhrman who finished with nine points.

“She shot the ball well,” Lloyd noted. “It was nice to see her score.”

Lloyd said the Lady Owls’ defense played well.

“Our pressure defense worked well,” he admitted. “We got on their three-point shooters and limited them. We played great defense.”

Morris came off the bench and “gave us a big boost,” Lloyd said. “She had a couple great assists. Nicole Teribery came off the bench and gave us a lift, too. Katie Vecellio hit a couple big shots as well.

“To win by 18 down here is big for us. This gives us a lot of momentum going into Friday. Everybody is playing well. We have to keep it up.”

Clearfield ends its season 5-19.
